This book deals with the design, fabrication, and characterisation of CMOS VCSEL drivers for two-dimensional optical interchip links. The realization of two 4x8 optical transmitters with a total aggregated data throughput of 32 Gbit/s and 80 Gbit/s, respectively, is reported. The experimental results demonstrate the impressive data throughput that optical based interchip links offer. The introduced circuit concepts allow the realization of driver arrays with a minimum power consumption, an excellent uniformity and cross talk performance. A novel circuit concept, which allows an easy integration of a current peaking driving scheme in CMOS, is presented.
