EMF Risk Assessment:

"In Vitro" Research and Sleep Studies.

2005; 180 pages. € 64,00. ISBN 3-89649-972-6

This thesis deals with the development and characterization of optimized exposure systems for in vitro and human laboratory studies focussing on possible health risks from electromagnetic fields. Three novel in vitro systems based on rectangular waveguides were realized for the mobile communication frequency bands of GSM 900 MHz, DCS 1800 MHz and UMTS 1950 MHz. Furthermore, a system for extremely low frequency magnetic fields was developed to analyze the field exposures from electrical power-supply systems. In order to characterize the strong RF absorption gradients, a novel ultra-small temperature probe was designed. The thermistor sensor is based on a 50µm x 100µm layer of amorphous Germanium. For the purpose of meaningful human studies, a novel exposure system with minimized inter-subject variability has been developed and dosimetrically analyzed.

Jürgen Schuderer was born in 1972. He received his M.S. degree in Physics from the University of Freiburg, Germany in 1999 and completed his thesis at the Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques, Freiburg. From 1999 to 2003 he was with the Integrated Systems Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich to accomplished his Ph.D. In late 2003 he joined the Foundation for Research on Information Technologies in Society (IT’IS), Switzerland. His primary research interest is concentrated on engineering electromagnetics, with special emphasis on sensor systems, measurement techniques, multiphysics simulation and biomedical applications.
