The focus of this dissertation is on the design of a direct-conversion
receiver für third-generation mobile communications. After providing the
necessary background in terms of system level design, an in-depth theoretical
analysis of the operation of the active switching mixer is presented. The
leakage of the strang transmitter signal in the FDD mode of UMTS poses very
stringent linearity requirements on the receiver, and particularly on the ilP2
of the 1/0 demodulator. An external receiver filter is used in the implemented
zero-IF receiver prototype to surmount the insufficient ilP2 of the 1/0
demodulator achieved für typical tolerances and speed in CMOS. To improve the
ilP2 of the demodulator necessary to remove the external RX filter, an
innovative ilP2 enhance- ment technique is presented. The description of the
implemented in a 0.13 μm CMOS process 1/0 demodulator with improved
ilP2 along with its experimental characterization concludes this work.
Ilian Kouchev received his
M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Varna,
Bulgaria in 1998. In 2000 he obtained a Post Graduate Degree in Communication
Systems from the Swiss Federallnstitute of Technology (ETH), Lausanne. In the
same year, he joined the Integrated Systems Laboratory (IIS) of ETH Zürich as a
research and teaching assistant, where he worked in the fjeld of receiver
design für radio communications.
