The most efficient use of wireless communications calls for different
trade-offs for different applications in terms of air interface and
implementation cost, thus different standards must always
coexist. Recent rapid expansion of wireless and the accompanying multitude of
standards, however, make multi-mode or reconfigurable radio terminals a
pressing need for users and industry alike. Therefore programmable design system
topologies (DSP, FGPA) are now flourishing but unfortunately without
consistently solving the problem of increasing power consumption and chip area
utilization. The present contribution is the integration of a dedicated
base-band digital front-end where different standards (GSM-EDGE/WCDMA/WLAN)
coexist, and of a WCDMA/HSDPA signal processing part, for synchronization and
data stream decoding. The core occupies 3.6mm$^2$ and consumes 0.4/47.7/17.2mW in
GSM/WCDMA/WLAN mode.
Chiara Martelli received her M.S.
degree in electrical engineering from the Alma Mater Studiorum, University of Bologna,
Italy, in 2000, after having completed her diploma thesis at the Integrated
Systems Laboratory (ISL), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich. In
2001 she officially joined ISL as a research and teaching assistant, where she
worked as digital designer for the analog and mixed-signal design group. Since
2006 she is a senior design engineer with Advanced Circuit Pursuit (ACP) AG,
Zollikon.
