The main objective of this thesis was to investigate the efficiency of the existing subcell modeling techniques and to propose new, improved subcell models with a strong focus on robust applicability to real-world problems.
The consequent reformulation of the subcell models (curved metal and dielectric interfaces, edge field singularity) with modified standard FDTD update coefficients provides the basis for profiting from the tremendous speedup using hardware acceleration solution. All of the FDTD subcell models derived and proposed in this thesis can profit from the speed of the hardware accelerated FDTD solver. In addition, the developed subcell modeling technique was fully adapted to the implicit method called ADI-FDTD (alternating direction implicit FDTD), which overcomes the time step restriction.
The developed robust conformal discretization algorithm for CAD based models enabled the straight forward application of the subcell modeling technique to highly complex configurations. With the deduced stability criterion, the subcell model enhanced FDTD algorithm has proven to be efficient and versatile for today?s engineering problems.
