Exploiting wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), the immense optical bandwidth potential of single-mode fibers is on the way to be utilized. This book deals with the realization of low-loss, low-crosstalk, polarization insensitive integrated optical wavelength multiplexer (MUX) modules for WDM applications in fiber-optic communication networks. It discusses the physics, the design, the fabrication, and the packaging of arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) type wavelength MUX's. A method without penalty for compensating polarization sensitivity of AWG's based on Si02/Si using stress release grooves is described. An advanced design for low-loss, low-crosstalk and low channel imbalance is presented. Various materials and design strategies based on realized InGaAsP/lnP and Si02/Si wavelength MUX's as well as reflective AWG's are addressed.
