A Probabilistic Approach to
Building Roof Reconstruction.
First edition 2003, 216 pages, € 64,00. ISBN 3-89649-841-X
This book presents a novel approach to the automated reconstruction of building roofs from high resolution aerial imagery. The key feature of the proposed method lies in the combination of two complementary approaches. One focuses on the three-dimensional scene geometry, whereas the other is driven by the semantics of the scene.
Within the scope of the geometry based approach simple geometric primitives are grouped into more complex structures in space, based on a probabilistic interpretation of the input data. Particular attention is devoted to the Bayesian formulation of this reconstruction problem which avoids overfitting the data but which is still able to capture relevant geometric details.
Additionally, a semantic interpretation of the preliminary geometric models is acchieved by domain specific semantic labelling. This enables the algorithm to automatically infer missing parts of the model and to correct the overall model topology. It is the semantic interpretation of the geometry which renders this task selective and thus enables to preserve important details.
Stephan Scholze received a Dipl. Phys. degree with a focus on theoretical physics and numerical simulations from the University of Stuttgart, Germany in 1998. After a year in IT-consultancy, he joined the Computer Vision Laboratory of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zürich. He was awarded a Ph.D. degree (Dr. sc. techn.) from ETH in 2002 for his work on probabilistic geometric modelling and the semantic interpretation of three-dimensional geometry.
