In this thesis, we describe
the communication architecture of the blue-c, a novel platform for
tele-immersive collaborative applications enhanced by 3D video conferencing
features. The blue-c communication layer builds on CORBA, an open standard for
distributed object computing, and deals with common networking services and
real-time multimedia streaming and coding of geometry and appearance data for
free-viewpoint video.
First, we analyze data streams in the context of virtual environments for
telepresence. In the design of our communication architecture, we follow an
attribute-centric approach and discuss the consequences thereof for application
data updates. Moreover, we review architectures for real-time free-viewpoint
video pipelines and derive theoretical bounds on the minimal system latency as
a function of the transmission and processing delays.
The coding of geometry-enhanced free-viewpoint video is first discussed for 3D
video recording systems. We propose an object-space 3D video coding scheme
using a hierarchical point data structure and an image-space coding framework
for 3D video data.Our real-time 3D video pipeline for
distributed acquisition, processing and rendering is based on a differential
updating scheme and allows to transmit a 3D video stream at 10 frames per
second with a mean bit rate between 1.5 and 2.5 megabit per second. Finally, we
demonstrate the communication and networking features of the blue-c system in
its full deployment.
About the author:
Edouard Lamboray was a PhD student at the Computer Graphics Laboratory at ETH Zurich,
Switzerland. He received a degree in communication systems engineering from the
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and from the Eurecom Institute in Sophia-Antipolis, France. His research
interests include networking and coding aspects of free-viewpoint video and of
collaborative distributed virtual environments.
