Object Detection using
Scale-specific Boosted Parts
and a Bayesian Combiner
First edition 2004, 154 pages, € 64,00. ISBN 3-89649-960-2

This book presents new algorithms for object detection in still images with empirical evaluations on face, pedestrian and car detection. The general approach here is to identify novel, complementary visual cues and to combine them with traditional detection paradigms.

Face detection serves as a starting point for introducing a general object detection framework. As a first cue human skin is explored and reliably found in images by combining color and shape information using mutual information registration. A a second cue the local context of faces is detected using intensity-driven integral image features and AdaBoost learning. Both cues are demonstrated to provide complementary information effectively improving face detection accuracy.

Inspired by the local context cue's remarkable resilience to resolution degradation the book then introduces the "scaleparts" object detection framework. From an abstract point of view, the scaleparts framework aims to increase robustness to resolution changes in object detection by combining several scale-dedicated part detectors. The actual implementation employs boosted classifier cascades for very fast object part detection and uses Bayesian Networks to combine their outputs.

Hannes Kruppa obtained a B.S. degree in computer  science and medicine from the University of Tuebingen, Germany in 1996 and a M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from ETH Zurich in 1999. Together with Sebastian Thrun, Dieter Fox and Wolfram Burgard he received the DAGM outstanding paper award the same year honoring work on collaborative multi-robot localization. Afterwards he joined the Perceptual Computing and Computer Vision Group of ETH Zurich as a Research Assistant focussing on computer vision and machine learning. He has been a visiting scientist at Carnegie-Mellon University (CMU) in 1998/1999 and in the summer of 2002 and is an alumnus of the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung) and of Rotary International.
