Um die junge Generation wissen zu lassen

Um die junge Generation wissen zu lassen, veröffentlichen wir auch diese Geschichten der jüdischen Berliner Familie Bradt im Kontext der Zeitgeschichte, weit mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert danach, obwohl und weil laut einer repräsentativen Umfrage vom Dezember 1998 zwei Drittel aller Deutschen endlich einen Schlussstrich ziehen möchten (vgl. Südkurierl Konstanz, 23.12.1998, S.2).

Um die junge Generation wissen zu lassen: 1. Rückblick enthält Erinnerungen der Verfasserin an ihren ersten Besuch nach 40 Jahren in ihrer Geburtsstadt Berlin 1983 auf Einladung der Stadt, wobei man wieder einmal ahnen kann, was Berlin und Deutschland mit ihren Jüdinnen und Juden verloren haben.

- 2. Der Vater ist ein Porträt des Arztes und engagierten Juden Dr. med. Gustav Bradt, der bereits 1928 verstarb: "Der Kummer der Familie, seiner Freunde und Mitarbeiter war erschütternd", warum, wird in den Nachrufen deutlich. - 3. Unsere Mutter enthält das Bild einer liebenden Mutter und Malerin, die es nicht mehr geschafft hatte, aus Deutschland herauszukommen und in der Nacht vom 1. zum 2. März Gift schluckte, "nachdem sie den gefürchteten Brief erhielt, in dem ihr befohlen wurde, sich am kommenden Morgen um 8 Uhr früh am Anhalter-Bahnhof einzufinden." - Bis Ende 1937 hatten die vier Geschwister Deutschland verlassen können, Tutti war es in diesem Jahr sogar gelungen, mit ihrem Mann ins damalige Palästina zu gelangen, nicht ohne dass sie zuvor noch genug erlebt hatte. - 4. Die Gestapo schildert die Verhaftung der Verfasserin und wirft ein interessantes Licht auf das schwierige Leben der jüdischen Jugend damals. - 5. Mein Bruder beschreibt das kurze und erfolgreiche Leben Professor Dr. Helmut Bradts, der das Dritte Reich glücklicherweise überlebte, aufgrund einer Intervention Professor Albert Einsteins in der Schweiz verbleiben durfte, sich vom staatenlosen Emigrantenjungen zum Atomphysiker der Weltklasse entwickelte, jedoch viel zu früh sterben musste. - 6. Micki schließlich ist die Geschichte einer jüdischen Freundin, die aus Krakau stammt, nach Polen abgeschoben wurde, in Taschkent überlebte und heute als Malerin in Spanien lebt. Fotos und ausgewählte Dokumente vervollständigen die kleine Familiengeschichte, - auszugsweise bereits in zwei Folgen im Aufbau (New York) erschienen.

To tell the younger generation

To tell the younger generation, we are also publishing this story of the Bradts, a Jewish family from Berlin, in the context of contemporary history, over a half century later, even though (and because), according to a representative survey of December 1998, two-thirds of all Germans would like to finally dose the books on this period of German history (cf. 'Südkurier' , Konstanz 12/23/1998, p. 2).

To tell the younger generation: 1. Retrospective contains memories of the author's first visit in forty years to Berlin, the city where she was born, in response to an invitation from the mayor, whereby we receive another intimation of what Berlin and Germany lost with its Jewish citizens. 2. Our father is a portrait of the physician and dedicated Jew, Dr. Gustav Bradt, who passed away in 1928: "The grief of our family, his friends and colleagues was traumatic." The reason for this is made clear by his obituaries. 3. Our mother offers a picture of a loving mother and painter who was unable to escape from Germany and took poison on the first of March, 1943, late in the evening, "after receiving the dreaded letter which ordered her to report to the Anhalter train station at eight o'clock the next morning." (The Anhalter station was formerly the largest international train station in Berlin; it was destroyed in the war). - The four Bradt siblings had managed to leave Germany by late 1937. Tutti and her husband had even succeeded in reaching Palestine (present-day Israel) that year, but not uneventfully. 4. The Gestapo describes the author's arrest and throws an interesting light on the difficult lives of Jewish youth in those days. 5. My brother recounts the short, but successful life of Professor Helmut Bradt, who had the good fortune to survive the Third Reich in Switzerland due to the intervention of Albert Einstein, rose from a stateless emigrant to a world-class atomic physicist, but died too young. 6. Micki is the story of a Jewish girlfriend from Cracow who was deported from Poland to a forced labor camp in the East by the Soviets, survived in Tashkent and Kenya and now lives as a painter in Spain. Photos and selected documents complete this brief family history.
