Ich wollte unbedingt, dass das Leben meines Großvaters Isbert Semmel meiner Familie und auch dem Rest der Welt in Erinnerung bleibt. Ich konnte den Gedanken nicht ertragen, dass alle seine Dokumente und Fotos nur irgendwo abgeheftet und eventuell vernichtet würden. Das Ergebnis der Veröffentlichung dieses Buches ist, dass wir nun eine vollständige Aufzeichnung von Isbert Semmels Lebenskampf besitzen. Ich weiß jetzt, wie hart er als junger Mann arbeitete, um Apotheker zu werden und die sehr erfolgreiche Zions-Apotheke in Berlin aufzubauen. Seine Entscheidung, nach England zu emigrieren, erwies sich als weise, sollte aber mit weiteren Schwierigkeiten und Härten verbunden sein, die in diesem Buch beschrieben sind.

I wanted my Grandfather Isbert's life to be remembered both by my own descendants and the world at large. I could not bear the thought of all his papers being just put away somewhere or maybe destroyed. The result of publishing this book is that we now have a full record of Isbert Semmel's struggle in life. I now know how hard he worked as a young man to qualify as a pharmacist and to develop the highly successful business of Zions-Apotheke in Berlin. His departure from Germany to the UK proved to be a wise move by himself but it was fraught with difficulty and more hardships to follow which are described in this book.
